The Haram Minute
Seven of the 22 designated zones start within fifteen minutes' walk of their mosque, five in Makkah (Burj Ajyad, Abraj Makkah, Jabal Omar, King Salman Gate and Masar) and two in Madinah (Rua Al-Madinah and Madinah Zone 1). Eight start more than an hour's walk away, and the farthest, Dahiyat Sumou, is 16.7 km from the Grand Mosque.

Where the zones are
Both cities on the same square and at the same scale, so the two compare. Each opens on the ground around its mosque and zooms out to the whole city, with the roads, the Haramain line and, in Makkah, the 29 signposted crossings of the sacred precinct.

Designated does not mean near the Haram
Of the 22 zones the portal maps in the two cities, 14 start within an hour on foot of their mosque. The nearest and the farthest are equally designated: the word says who may own there and nothing about how long the walk to the mosque takes.

Each bar runs from the zone's nearest boundary point to its farthest, measured to its own mosque; the upright tick is its centre of area, drawn only where the bar is long enough to carry one; for a ring-shaped or multi-part zone that centre is not itself inside the zone. The last column is the walk to the nearest edge, at least; where the zone's far edge is beyond the hour the bar is drawn in blue and the figure is set in grey. The shaded band at the left is the span the plate above covers, and the code before each name is the register's own. Rows marked ▪ are drawn on the plate.

How it is worked out
The portal publishes a boundary for every zone. We take its nearest point to the mosque and measure the straight line, then walk it at the two speeds in the US Federal Highway Administration's pedestrian study: 1.2 metres a second, and 1.0 metres a second where many of the people on foot are older, as on both approaches most days. It is one division, and anyone can repeat it.
Past 60 minutes we stop calling it a walk and give the distance instead.
Why the walk is a floor
A detour factor would give a route time that looks precise and is a guess, because we do not hold the street network, which gate you would use or how crowded a Friday is. No route between two points is shorter than the straight line between them, so the floor it gives is a figure about the walk that no route can undercut.
That also makes it a check on a brochure. Where a developer publishes its own walking time, the project page puts the two side by side, and if the brochure says five minutes where the geometry says at least eleven, the brochure is measuring from somewhere else.
What it leaves out
- The route. Nobody walks through a city in a straight line.
- The building. It is measured from a zone's boundary, because the portal publishes zone boundaries and no project's position.
- The conditions on the day. Crowds, gradient, heat and closed gates can only make the walk longer.
- The last stretch. It runs to the mosque and stops short of the Kaaba or the Rawdah.
Questions buyers ask
Or ask us, and our assistant answers from the same sources.
How far is the nearest designated zone from the Grand Mosque?
Burj Ajyad in Makkah is the nearest: its boundary is 310 m from the Grand Mosque in a straight line, which is at least 5 to 6 minutes on foot.
Are all the designated zones near the Haram?
No. Eight of the 22 start more than an hour’s walk from their mosque. Designation decides who may own in a zone and says nothing about how near it is.
How is the Haram Minute calculated?
It is the straight-line distance from each zone boundary the Saudi Properties portal publishes, divided by the two walking speeds in the US Federal Highway Administration pedestrian capacity study: 1.2 metres a second, and 1.0 metres a second where many pedestrians are older. A walk is never shorter than a straight line, so the result is the least the walk can take.

Saudi Properties portal — zone boundaries
Zone areas and distances on this site come from the boundaries the Saudi Properties portal publishes for each zone; a distance is the straight line from the nearest point of that boundary to the Grand Mosque or the Prophet's Mosque, so the walk is always longer.FHWA — Capacity Analysis of Pedestrian and Bicycle Facilities (FHWA-HRT-98-107) · 1 Feb 1998
The US Federal Highway Administration's pedestrian capacity study recommends a walking speed of 1.2 metres per second for most conditions, and 1.0 metres per second where more than a fifth of the people using a facility are aged 65 or over.Saudi Properties portal — zone boundaries
A designated zone is not necessarily near the mosque: measured from each zone's nearest boundary point, Makkah's zones run from about 310 metres to about 16.7 kilometres from the Grand Mosque, and Madinah's from about 650 metres to about 12.4 kilometres from the Prophet's Mosque.Saudi Properties portal — zone list and ownership-rules cards
On the Saudi Properties portal every designated zone in the two holy cities carries an ownership-rules card allowing a 100% ownership share, a usufruct of up to 99 years and all ten real-rights types (ownership and usufruct among them) for Muslim natural persons.Saudi Properties portal — zone list
The portal lists twelve designated zones in Makkah and ten in Madinah; the twelfth Makkah zone is 'Makkah Al-Mukarramah – Zone (3)', code L337 — about 1.29 km², its nearest boundary roughly 3.7 km south-west of the Grand Mosque, with the same ownership rules as the others.
